In this episode of The Housing Connection, Chas Olson talks with Mike Harsma, the Director of Single Family Development and the Governors House Program at South Dakota Housing. They discuss how the South Dakota Governor’s House Program has made a huge difference in South Dakota.

This program was created to improve housing affordability, workforce development, and economic growth. It has greatly helped families and communities throughout the state.

From Training to Transformation

The Governor’s House Program started in 1996 as a Department of Corrections initiative to provide inmates at the Mike Durfee State Prison with trade certifications and job skills. Today, inmates gain experience in carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing, preparing them for successful careers post-incarceration. This training not only benefits individuals but also helps address the state’s shortage of skilled tradespeople.

Affordable, Energy-Efficient Housing

Designed for moderate-income households, Governor’s Houses are energy-efficient homes built off-site and transported to communities across South Dakota. These homes have features like heat pumps and smart framing. They can also help owners save on utility costs.

A Community Builder

While Governor’s Houses can be placed anywhere in the state, the program often serves rural, underserved, and tribal communities, offering affordable housing solutions where new construction is often limited. Success stories include towns like Doland and Harriet, where these homes have revitalized communities by attracting families and increasing school enrollments.
